Careers in Education Start With Education

It simply makes sense that a successful career as an educator must be based upon a solid foundation with one’s own education.  Whether you plan to focus on a career in k-12 education or eventually want to instruct at institutions of higher learning, you need to know what you need to start.  With that knowledge you can begin to build a plan that includes a timeline of educational goals and eventual career goals.  Your own education is the first step to your career in education, and your focus and determination in meeting your educational goals will help to define your potential for success as an educator.

Your first requirement will be to earn a bachelor’s degree. The field in which you choose to study should reflect your career goals.  You do not necessarily have to major in education in order to pursue a career in education, however if you choose to major in another field, it should be related to the subjects or topics you plan to teach.  This is especially true for mathematics and sciences, as the certifications to teach these courses can be challenging.  If you do plan to teach at a university level, you almost must begin by majoring or minoring within the field you plan to pursue.

Once you’ve gotten your bachelor’s degree, you’ll have to become certified to teach in your state.  Different states have different requirements for k-12 educators. Those requirements may include a degree, a teaching certification, and a period of time spent as a teaching assistant.  While that may sound intimidating, keep in mind that much of your bachelor’s degree can be completed at your own pace by utilizing online courses.  Also, you’ll probably be able to begin working in the classroom as an assistant or substitute, depending on your state’s laws, before you complete your final certification.
