It is time for you to finally answer the question of “What do you want to be when you grow up?” This is something people have been asking you since you were old enough to understand and now it is time to pick the answer and have it dictate the rest of your life. If you answer the question with the typical answer of “I don’t know” and people usually respond with asking you what do you enjoy. One thing to remember when picking a major for college is keep your hobbies separate from your actual job or find a way to make it work in the business world.
If your hobby is painting and you are actually good at it, a major in art is always risky. What will you do this degree? Many people who get degrees in liberal arts or find arts will end up being a teacher because there is not much you can do with these. This isn’t to say you should pursue your love of art, but if you love painting thinking about what business aspect you can take with your artistic ability. You can open your own gallery or work in acquisitions for a gallery. Try to focus your talents on something that will pay your bills and surround with what you love, but isn’t your only source of income. Same thing goes with people who love to write. Do you enjoy writing articles on facts then maybe a degree in journalism? If you enjoy writing fiction, perhaps you can work for a publishing company. Try to find some real life application for that artsy degree you are going to spend thousands of dollars on.
People will always tell you to do something you love, but if you turn something you love into a job you may stop loving it.
